Different Ways to Reduce Power Consumption at Home

by GuestPoster on March 13, 2011

Many home appliances we use silently consume extra power that we could do without when electricity is becoming more expensive by the day all over the world. There are several different ways to reduce power consumption at home, but before opting for any one method, you are advised to have a home energy audit done by a professional from a local utility company or your local government or some other agency to assess your power usage. You may even get a free audit depending upon where you live.

Alternatively, you can also do it by yourself with an inexpensive handheld power meter which won’t cost you more than $40 at the most – if you are up to it. Many people opt to do it themselves as they are more familiar with their own habits, equipment and appliances. Once you know your actual need and the culprit behind the most power consumption, there are several things you can do to save money on your electric bill.

To start with you could change your habits such as switching off the light before leaving a room, turning off appliances that are not in use, unplugging batteries when they are not in use, etc. Many people habitually forget to do these simple things, and then end up complaining when they get the bill.

For better measure, you could replace power-hugging appliances and equipment with newer ones that consume considerably less power. For example, traditional incandescent light bulbs consume far more power than you think they do and you could start by replacing them with CFLs which need far less power to given more light. You could even walk or bicycle to work on at least one day of the week to make your contribution to carbon emission reduction.

The worldwide concern for global warming and the effect of the financial crisis makes this the right time to take such a step. Having done all of the above, you could better still take the long term approach and go for the emerging technologies that are more environment-friendly and could save you far more money in the long run. Considering everything, by far the best is solar power for homes which is rapidly gaining popularity all over the world. It may cost a bit to install install solar panels at first, but in the long run it can save you a lot of money on electricity.
