How Many Ways Are There to Make Clay Beads

If you are a teacher or a parent and you want to know how to make clay beads then the first question you have to ask is what kind of clay do you want to use. It’s a bit more complicated than easy sewing crafts but, children, especially girls love to make jewelry and it is great fun to make them out of clay. There are actually two ways to make beads or rather two types of clay to make beads from. The first type is made from air dry hardening clay. It is sold by a few companies and comes in packs of 2 pounds, 5 pounds, 25 pounds and even 50 pounds. After you use the clay it is very important to make sure to keep it in a an air tight container otherwise it may dry out before you even get a chance to use it.

The way to deal with the air dry clay is as follows. Since it comes in large blocks it is best off cut with either a piece of string , yarn or wire. You hold the wire between you two hands and just slice of a piece of the clay. The children then have to take the slab of clay they have and divide it into as many beads as they would like. Each piece of clay then has to be rolled into a ball. Once they have all the balls nicely rolled, you will need to make a hole in the clay. you can use a needle but, that may make a hole that is too small. If it is then a thin straw or even a pencil may make a hole that is big enough. The beads then must be left to dry. After they are dried they can be painted and strung.

The second type of clay beads to make are made out of polymer clay. Polymer clay is much different than the air drying gray clay. It is a very different consistency is softer, more pliable and does not dry out. In order to make these beads the clay will have to be fired in a kiln after they are rolled with holes made in them. You can paint them before you put them in but, if you want them glazed then you will have to fire them twice. After the are fired the first time you put on the glaze and then have to re fire them to get that shiny pottery like look.
