How To Repair A Lawn That Is Damaged By Pests

If you are trying to repair a lawn that has been damaged by pests, the first thing that you need to do is to make sure that all of the pests are gone. Sometimes you can figure this out by digging through the soil and looking for them. Other times you can figure it out by looking right on the surface of the soil. If you are trying to get rid of the pests like grubs, they’re going to be below the surface.

The first thing that you should do is that you should apply pesticide or grub killer. Then, you want to wait about two or three weeks before trying to repair your lawn. This will give a chance for the grub killer to work its way down into the soil and kill whatever pests are still there.

The next thing you’re going to want to do when you repair lawn is determine whether or not to tear out your lawn or just repair it. You can do this by finding out how deep the layer of “dead thatch” (what is left of your lawn) is. If it is less than one half of an inch, you can simply rent a power rake and tear it out. Then, you can reseed your lawn with a layer of top dressing, and you can have new grass growing in right next to your old grass.  If you have more than three quarters of an inch of “dead thatch”, than what you really want to do is just tear out all the lawn that is there. You can do it with a power rake on a very deep setting, or you can also do it with a sod cutter. Make sure that you haul away all of the dead sod so that you can either reseed or you can lay down new sod.

When doing lawn repair, it is important that you get rid of the sod, so that the grass will have a much easier time growing into the soil. It is also a good idea to put down more soil so that you’ll have better quality dirt in which to grow your lawn.  If you don’t tear up the lawn, you only need about ¼ inch of topsoil in order for the seeds to germinate. If you do decide to tear out your lawn, it is probably good idea to add 2 to 4 inches of topsoil to your new lawn.
