Septum Deviation Symptoms

The nasal septum plays an important part in the body because it makes the division of nasal cavity into two equal parts- the left and the right nostrils. It is normally located at the center of the nose. There are certain instances though that the nasal septum is misplaced from its normal position and the deviated septum symptoms are then experienced.

What are the causes of deviated septum? Not all persons with deviation can recognize the presence of crookedness in the nasal area unless taken a closer look and the use of special devices for better visualization can be a big help. There are some people that are born with the defects brought by abnormalities in fetal development and there are those that came from nasal trauma and injuries in the latter years.

The symptoms of deviated septum usually do not cause significant changes in one’s life but there are those that are affected with it severely. The deviated septum symptoms can bring discomforts as well as pain that will require surgery to fix the problem. Since one of the nostrils is smaller than the other, the passage of air down to the airway is difficult arising problems that may get worse over time if no prompt treatments are given.

What are the symptoms of deviated septum? The following are the symptoms of a severe type of deviation:

  • Nasal obstruction
  • Nasal congestion
  • Nosebleeds
  • Post nasal drip
  • Recurrent sinus infections and allergies
  • Facial pain
  • Noisy breathing
  • Sleep apnea

When these symptoms affects the person especially in breathing, it is best to see the doctor immediately to rule out the presentations and for the doctor to give managements for a better condition. There are medications used to halt the symptoms but they are not effective for total elimination of it. The medications like pain relievers and anti-allergies are used only to alleviate the sufferings.

The surgery for deviated septum, or septoplasty, is the surgical management to relieve the person from deviated septum symptoms. This is the main treatment to correct the flaws inside the nose and to make breathing in easy way. Mostly, the surgical procedure is indicated for those people who have the severe type of nasal septum defects. The procedure is short making the recovery done at a faster rate. Once the surgery is over, there are noted improvements on the lives of those who are previously affected with it. There will no longer be struggles in breathing and sufferings brought by the symptoms.
