Steps in Growing Potatoes

by GuestPoster on February 7, 2012

The potato is one of the most widely cultivated vegetable in the world. Potatoes are not produced from seeds unlike other plants. They are grown from tubers. In addition, they are susceptible to many diseases. It is important to know the correct way to grow potatoes. You can buy tubers from horticulture centers. Remember that you have to buy tubers that are certified by the state. These tubers are also called seed potatoes.

The first step in growing potatoes is to put a layer of potatoes in a place that is exposed to sunlight. They must be heated to at least seventy degrees Fahrenheit.

The second step is to wait for the surface of potatoes to turn green. Germs are important because it allows the plant to grow in just a couple of weeks. You must remember that the B size tubers do not require any cutting. Other potato seeds should be cut more though. This is important in learning how to plant potatoes.

The third step in growing potatoes is to store them for a week before planting them. Let them dry first, so that bubbles are formed. They should be kept in a room with a temperature of seventy degrees Fahrenheit. It should also be well ventilated. You have to seal it in a box with holes. Never store them in an airless container.

The fourth step in growing potatoes is to prepare the seeds for planting. Potatoes can be planted from the first day of the second week of March to June. You have to plant them in the morning, when the temperature is about fifty degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds must be buried four inches deep into the ground. Never plant before March because the seeds will rot.

The fifth step to grow potatoes is to plant them in lines, which are four feet away from each other. This gives them a wide range to grow and allows for better cultivation.

The sixth step is to build mounds so the water will reach the seed. If you’re expecting a frost, then you must cover them with straw.

Cultivation and watering the plants are two important things you should remember in growing potatoes. Cultivation involves loosening of the soil as well as removing weeds. Cultivation helps in enriching the soil to produce healthy plants. It also protects tubers from sunburn. Chicken hatcheries are also something to check out if you are the DIY type.
