What Are Three Reasons to Power Rake Your Grass?

by GuestPoster on March 30, 2012

One of the most common problems that cool weather grass lawns face is the over abundant build up of thatch in their grass.  Thatch can crowd out the sunlight and eventually destroy the part of your lawn that is healthy.  Getting rid of it before it can build up to this level is essential.   the easiest way to do this is with a power rake.  Using a power rake, you want to go over the entire lawn at least twice.  If you want to keep it from growing back, try planting higher quality grasses that are less likely to create thatch problems in the future.

The first reason why you would want to power rake grass would be to get rid of thatch build up in your lawn. As thatch builds up, it makes it a lot easier for you to develop lawn disease and to have severe problems with grubs destroying your lawn. The reason why is because thatch is mostly composed of dead lawn debris. It can start to decompose if it is wet for a long time. Usually this means that fungus will come in and start to digest this grass. This fungus can spread to the parts of your lawn that are alive and can have adverse effects on them as well.

The second reason why you should power rake is so that you can get rid of the unhealthy grass. When there is unhealthy grass, there is more competition for air, water, and sunlight. Also it makes fertilizing your lawn less effective and watering as well when you have a large buildup of thatch in your grass. After you get rid of the thatch buildup, then your lawn should start to look a lot more healthy. You should see the difference in just a few weeks.

The third reason why it is important to power rake is that you actually create a good place to start with renovating your lawn. By getting rid of all of the lawn debris, you are left with just the healthiest part of your grass and you are dirt. This makes the conditions ideal for applying grass seed and for fertilizing your lawn. The first step to renovating the lawn and helping it to look healthy again is to power rake and then seed it. In 6 to 8 weeks, when the grassy grows and you’ll have a lawn that looks completely different and that looks a lot better.
