When Should You Take Your Engagement Ring To A Jeweler?

With all of the money and symbolism behind your engagement ring, investing a little bit of time to make sure that it’s cared for properly is worth your while.

Your engagement ring can pretty easily get dirty and lose a lot of its shine.  There are some simple ways to clean it at home, but most people don’t have the tools or cleaners needed to really restore the ring to its best appearance.  Jewelers can get at all the nooks and crannies that trap dirt, as well as polish the ring with special cleaners that won’t damage the metal or any fillings in the diamond.  Another important things that they can do is check that the diamonds are still held securely in place.  Settings can come loose, and this can result in diamonds falling out if they aren’t checked and adjusted often.

Experts suggest that diamond rings be brought in for a professional cleaning and inspection every 6 months.  Twice a year should be the minimum for a typical ring.  Some rings will require more frequent inspection.  For example, expensive engagement rings with large diamonds, or with lots of diamonds, will need the settings checked more often.  Antique engagement rings with elaborate filigree patterns or other metal work may trap dirt more quickly and be too difficult for you to clean effectively at home.

Often, people are held up by the fear that a jeweler could remove their diamond and replace it with a less valuable one.  Don’t let this fear prevent you from getting your ring taken care of.  It is very rare for this to happen.  And you can always have the ring inspected by a third party.  A certificate can be made that describes the properties of the diamond and can easily be used to verify that the diamond in the ring is still the same one.  Researching jewelers and choosing one who has been around for a while and has a trustworthy reputation is another way to keep your diamond safe.

As long as you find a jeweler that you trust, then getting your ring checked and cleaned should be a simple and stress-free process that can save you a lot of hassle in the long run, and can keep your ring looking beautiful all the time.
