When was the NBA Founded?

The Basketball Association of America (or the NBA as it is now known all over the world) was founded in 1946 by the same people who owned most of the ice hockey arenas in the United States. In Toronto, Ontario on the 1st of November 1946 the Toronto Huskies played the New York Knickerbockers. This was the first game that the NBA calls in its entire history. It was a truly momentous occasion, even though the teams no longer exist.

During the early phases, there was the BAA and the NBL. In June 6, 1946 the BAA (Basketball Association of America) was founded in New York City. Similarly, the National Basketball League (NBL) was founded on the same year. The first champions of the BAA came from Minnesota. However, in 1949 the BAA agreed that they would become one with the NBL and they joined to form what is now the National Basketball Association. There were seventeen original teams, or franchises, that were a part of this association. There were some small teams and some bigger teams so it was a great blend of teams and talent.

The original teams that are still surviving to this day are the Knicks, Celtics, Warriors, Lakers, Royals (now the Kings), Pistons, Hawks and the Nationals (now the 76ers). New York City is still the home of the major NBA offices that serve their domestic competition and their other commercial interests.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has gone on to be one of the premier sports in this nation’s great history. Along with the NFL and the MLB it is amongst the three most popular sporting leagues in the United States and has fans from all over the world. There are many more franchises that have been added to the surviving beginners, however the league has always been dominated by a few teams.

The greatest rivalry in the NBA has always belonged to the Celtics and the Lakers. They have the most titles amongst the two of them and they have won their conferences record amounts of times. They have had some great NBA final battles and that tradition looks set to continue for the foreseeable future. Some great players have graced the NBA as well, such as Denis Rodman, Kobe Bryant and most of all Michael Jordan. He is the man who put the Chicago Bulls, and the NBA, on the worldwide map more than anyone else.
