How to be a Successful Work-at-Home Mom

by GuestPoster on November 30, 2010

When you have kids, your family will have increased financial needs.  One of the ironies of being a mother to small kids is that during a time when you could really use the income, it is very hard to leave your home during the day to work.  While there are some families with financial capabilities that can allow the mother to simply stay home and look after the children, most require dual incomes, particularly those who have more than one children.  Sometimes it isn’t about the money at all; women who have invested much on getting their college degrees do feel some guilt about not putting their education to good use, while still others miss the sense of accomplishment they experienced when they were earning paychecks.  Truth be told, it can get crazy having to face nothing but laundry and cleaning day after day.

If you are trying to get the best of both worlds, then a work-at-home career may be your best option. The rise of telecommuting and outsourcing are attracting a lot of investors and employers in recent times.   With the advent of technology and improved internet connectivity, it is now entirely possible to create a virtual office for yourself.

Legitimate careers for work-at-home moms include transcription, blogging, copywriting, and internet-based customer service.  Depending on your targeted clientele and skill level, a work-at-home job can pay as well as a regular desk job.  In some instances, freelancing is an even more lucrative option, because multiple part-time positions can be held simultaneously by just one person. There is certain to be a compatible workload for you, no matter how much or how little available working time you have.  One advantage of working at home is that you can avoid wasting several hours each day on the commute to and from a workplace.

If you want to give working from home a try, remember to deal only with reputable organizations to avoid getting scammed.  If an offer seems too good to be true, then be suspicious and tread carefully.  One of the safest platforms for freelancing is at oDesk.  You may want to check it out to see what you can reasonably expect in terms of job description and pay rates in your skill set.  Another important thing that you would also need to remember is that working freelance through the internet is essentially the same as working in an office where professionalism is concerned.  Having an employer from another country or time zone does not reduce any accountability in work standards and ethics.

Joana Chrystal Ventura-Moises is also an expert on plumbing and frameless shower doors.  Writing blogs about these areas of specialization is her work-at-home job.
